Before attempting my previous painting, "Morning Sunlight", I Googled morning sunlight through a window, and found just the kind of effect I was looking for in Peter Johan Kraft's "Morning Sunlight".  I borrowed his open window for "Breezy Morning"

Today, I decided to take another look before beginning "Breezy Morning".  It was a kick to Google "Morning Sunlight" and find my own painting among the images!

The grapes on my stand were artificial black ones that I had on a shelf.  There was no translucency in them, so I relied on my memory of painting red grapes.

Depression Bowl & Cherries

Last night I arranged this setup with the bowl and cherries, then proceeded to paint.  I wiped the bowl off several times before going online to see if anyone had tips on painting depression glass.  What I found was that another artist had painted a green depression glass bowl with cherries, and had posted her lovely painting on  Leslie Saeta's blog for the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge.  Honestly!  Depression glass and cherries!

I did not find any tips or demos, so I relied on principles of painting to guide me.  I almost left the cherries out to keep from appearing to be a copycat.  Glad I decided to keep them.

Meyer Lemons

My daughter also brought home a bag of Myer Lemons, grown by her grandfather in Baldwin County, Alabama.  Yes, they look like oranges.  I love the way they compliment my sister's blue bowl.  I wiped out the wedge slices and repainted them after watching Carol Marine's ArtByte on painting orange slices.  Why reinvent the wheel?  Thanks Poppy (and Carol)!

Fruit Basket

It seems that posting this photo on Facebook provoked a midnight snack in Tulsa, OK last night!  At least I don't paint jelly doughnuts!

Red Roses & Grapes

I happened upon a YouTube video of an artist by the name of Thomas Baker, who demonstrated the use of glazes to deepen shadows.  This is a method that is done after the paint has dried, at least somewhat.  It came in handy, as I started this painting a week ago, and I just got back to it today.  Tom has other YouTube videos, and he is about to release his second instructional DVD.

The pot in this painting is another of my sister Sheila's creations.

Jerry's Roses

I finished this painting on August 19, 2012.  Since then, much has happened to keep me away from my easel.   Life happens, doesn't it?  Getting back on the painting track, I look at this painting and wonder if the silver pot being so close to the center is a problem . . . among other painting transgressions I may have committed!  I am submitting this on the "Critique Me Challenge" on Daily Paintworks for some help from other artists.

Cropped Work in Progress

This is a work in progress.  There is more to the set-up, but I don't want to show more than this just now.  I am determined to paint every day and post, but I must get to sleep.  So, I have cropped the photo to include only the part that is developed to a respectable degree.  Hope to finish and post the entire painting...well... today, since it is almost 2am!

Lorie's Lisianthus

Lisianthus blooms are very similar to roses.  The bunch contained dozens of tiny graceful buds which continued to bloom, extending the life of the bouquet.  I took part of the bunch and placed them in one of my sister's pottery pieces.  The platter is one of Lorie's signature pieces, characterized by the crimped edge you see on the left.  Look for another such platter in my next post.  

Plums and Petunias

There are several things about this set-up that I love.  My sister made this little blue bowl, and I have used it in a previous painting.  The plums and cherries were fun to paint, and I love their rich reds.    Hopefully the sporadic tropical winds of TS Debby will not be too harsh on my white petunias, so I can continue to use them as subjects - practice, practice, practice!   Haven't painted brass in quite some time, so patience was called upon to see me through the greenish color of brass.  Thank goodness for highlights that make that brass shine!

Kitchen Windowsill

This painting is from a photograph of my kitchen windowsill.  The light from this west/northwest-facing window made the tomato positively glow.

"Tomatoes On White"

Again, these tomatoes were so beautiful and aromatic that it was extremely tempting to forego the painting and have a BLT. I started this painting on Tuesday, and tonight I finally finished it and ate the one on the far left. Delicious!

These tomatoes had that unbelievable fresh aroma that you get when you pluck them right off the vine. I had to resist cutting them for my salad on Tuesday. What is really funny is that the artists I follow on dailypaintworks.com had a Tomato Tuesday. Most of the twelve artists painted tomatoes that day.

Don't you love it when you find fruit or vegetables that are so beautiful, with stems and vines, or leaves? Don't you hate it when the grocery bagger plops them in a bag and the stems break off! :)

"Paint and Pottery"

My sister, Lorie, has begun to follow her own bliss in the past several years. She made the blue bowl in this painting. After I signed the previous painting today ("Copper and Zinnias"), I felt compelled to paint the featured fruit (before it was too late), and I thought the blue bowl would be a refreshing relief from the warm colors in my previous paintings. I am pleased with the outcome. Thank you, Lorie.

I guess all still life painters become collectors. I was delighted to find this little copper watering can at Blue Moon Antiques in Pensacola. It is a smaller, slightly different version of the watering can featured in the first painting of my blog. I just love painting copper!
